I cannot claim that the BBC is perfect, but as an institution it is unique in the world. What I do passionately believe is that the standards, integrity and independence of the BBC must be defended at all costs.

You know of another?

It is not just a broadcasting organisation, it is a public service organisation funded by the public (licence fees), and it is (so long as Blair does not get his way) independent of any political body. It is not privately owned, which differs from 90-odd percent of broadcasting organisations. It is adequately funded, which makes it so very different from PBS. It is independent, unlike the state broadcasting organisations of the eastern bloc.

I think unique covers it.

Okay. I'll just pretend the ABC doesn't exist then.
